Arts United for Davidson County and the Edward C. Smith Civic Center Work Together to Bring Gallery Space to Lexington

The idea was born several months ago.  The Civic Center was preparing to undergo renovations of its lobby and ballroom and was looking for a way to offer gallery space to the community – something that had been missing since the Arts Center closed in 2009.  (However, installation of a gallery hanging system was not in the renovation budget.)  Arts United had received a generous contribution earmarked for a visual arts project, and a hanging system seemed to be a perfect match for the funds.  After discussion and agreement by both boards, the project moved forward.

The Freegal™ Music Service will allow the Davidson County Public Library to increase the size and diversity of its collection by offering access to over 10,000 music labels from 65 different countries.

Concert by Elisabeth von Trapp

Elisabeth von Trapp will present a concert at Grace Episcopal Church inLexington,NC, on Saturday, September 22 at 7:00 pm.  Admission is free.  An offering will be taken during the performance and part of the proceeds will go to support theArts Academyat Grace, a Community School of the Arts for children and adults.

Second Annual BBQ Capital Cook-Off set for April 27-28

Competitive cooking teams from all over North Carolina and the Southeast and one as far away as Australia will work to perfect the thrill of the grill at the Second Annual BBQ Capital Cook-off in historic uptown Lexington April 27-28.

Coordinated by Uptown Lexington Inc. as a fundraiser for the downtown revitalization organization, the BBQ Capital Cook-off will bring approximately 50 teams to Lexington to compete for money and bragging rights in a city with a rich culinary heritage that is celebrated annually at the Barbecue Festival in October.

Lexington Parks and Recreation Announces Plans 
15th Annual Multicultural Festival

Lexington, – In its 15th year the Annual Multicultural Festival has become a premiere spring event for local residents in Davidson County and surrounding areas. The festival serves to enlighten the community of its vast ethnicities, their traditional customs, and exquisite cuisine.  A family friendly ambiance sets the mood for understanding, fun and excitement that is felt throughout the event.  This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 10 am until 5 pm at Finch Park at 15 Paul Beck Road in Lexington, NC.  There is no admission fee with free parking at the park and a shuttle service provided from the parking lot at Roses on Talbert Boulevard.

Davidson County Master Gardeners 7th Annual Garden Tour
Explore a new area of Davidson County with us—High Rock Lake. The gardens are fabulous as always. We have huge, large, medium and small yards in this year’s tour. All seven gardens are on the east side of the lake off of Highway 8. Tickets ($10) will be available at Southmont Fire Dept., 11030 Hwy 8, Southmont, as well as at each home on the days of the tour. They can be purchased in advance at the Agricultural Extension Building, 301 E. Center Street, Lexington (336-242-2087); Denton Public Library, 310 W. Salisbury St., Denton (336-859-2215); and Tom’s Creek Nursery, 6454 Old NC Hwy 49, Denton (336-857-2131). A program book will come with each ticket and have descriptions of the gardens, a detailed map and advertisements for local restaurants and businesses.
